It’s been a couple weeks since the Penny Arcade Expo in Boston finished, but there are some games that we felt needed special attention. Many people may be excited about Halo 5, Final Fantasy XV, and the Witcher 3 (to be fair, we are as well), however, there are some newcomers to the gaming world that have brought to the table some outstanding pieces of art, entertainment, and love.
So here are our top 4 picks for games to remember after PAX fever has subsided:
Highlands is an incredibly beautiful, hand drawn and painted strategy rpg. It was developed and successfully Kickstarted by the new indie game devs: Burrito Studio. The game is centered around a royal family that is attacked and exiled, they must fight to survive in this world in the sky filled with thousands of floating islands in the midst of a sea of butts.
The mechanics are straightforward and similar to the board game Risk. Unlike Risk, however, the game features several main characters that you must protect, because if, or when, they die your story (and playthrough) ends. Thankfully, you’ll have the ability to recruit additional aid (that can die as much as you want)!
In the end, we definitely are glad to see how much press this game got, because it’s clear to us that those with Burrito Studio put a lot of love into it. Check out their social media for more information, and look forward to seeing this game released on April 21st of 2015.
Death’s Gambit is an excellent, 2D side-scrolling adventure game that seems to be an amazing blend of Castlevania and Dark Souls. Fighting through merciless enemies with little respite, you must persevere to become Death’s agent with the quest to rid the world of immortals. With boss battles that give Shadow of the Colossus a run for its money, this looks like a brutal game that will leave us loving it! (or with Stockholm Syndrome)
The first game by the new indie development team White Rabbit, it was successfully Kickstarted and a favorite for PAX East. The game is still in early development, which is very exciting given the quality of their work, but it does mean that at this moment we have no official release date. Check out their information to find out more:
Speaking of Shadow of the Colossus, Jotun is an inspiring 2D monster-killing success story. Possibly the only game that could give Death’s Gambit nightmares, the game is incredibly fast paced and filled with true to it’s core Norse lore. You play Thora, a viking that has passed away ingloriously and has been punished by the Gods by being put into their version of Purgatory. Your only chance at entering Valhalla is to overcome 4 towering Jotun, or Giants, to prove your worth.
Jotun is made by Thunder Lotus Games, and is their first launch title. Expected to come out later this year in the fall, we’re very excited about the amazing work that’s been put into this so far, and about all that we know is yet to come.
Okay, so video game developers The Behemoth aren’t exactly new at making games, but hear us out! The guys who brought you Castle Crashers, Alien Hominid, and Battle Block Theatre, continue to push themselves to new limits. Their new game, lovingly referred to as Game 4 while the official name is pending, is a fun-loving, slightly murderous, and always witty RPG. The art style is the ever recognizable cutesy/sometimes-gross setup we have grown to love. Not much more can be said about the game already, because if you’ve played any of their other games you know that this one is bound for just as great of things!
