The State of OTC: 2017

Where We Were

In 2015 we released our very first game “Defend Your Dojo”. It was a proud moment for all of us at OTC. We had dreams and aspirations for DYD. After we had launched the game, we wanted to do continuous content updates, and even eventually turn it into an MMO. We even had a couple mobile games in the works, (still do and I’ll get to that later), our aspirations were at an all time high for 2016.

But then the Fire Nation attacked…err… wrong story.

 

What Happened

Jumping into 2016, we didn’t realize is that we were biting off more than we could chew. All of us here had day jobs beyond OTC and were even migrating to new career fields that limited the amount of time we could work on developing games (as most indie devs know, starting up a company in this industry doesn’t immediately put food on the table). Tim and myself moved to new careers at EETech. I had also started to focus heavily on music again. Joseph moved on to work for HCL (Contracted by Micron). Where did this leave Kcody? He started a full-time job as a dad (hooray for starting a family!), but still also worked full time at his day job.

All of our lives changed in 2016. We all lost valuable time we would have been spending on game development or OTC (for the better and worse), to either work or different aspects of life. Because of this, we nearly dissolved the company. It had crossed my mind, as well as Kcody’s to take the steps to do so. We all had stopped development of the games we were working on, and it seemed like the days of OTC gaming were over, but then….

I had been struggling with music production and the message I was trying to portray with my music. The music industry itself seemed to be less and less about the music itself, and more so about your image and the memes you posted (I know, I know, we all love a good meme, but it was, and still is, getting out of hand). I wanted to express myself and my art in a new way that was different from what everyone else was doing. That’s when it hit me. I could be combining my love of games, and my music. I could express myself visually and through music at the same time, creating an experience.

This was what I had been looking for. I immediately started working on a new project, combining my music, with a new game title. I pitched the idea to Kcody, Tim, and Joseph and they all loved it. Just when I thought OTC would disappear, it returned and in full force and the troops were rallied.

 

Where We Are Going Now

We are going to start with a clean slate. That is, we are going to finish developing the games we were working on that were nearly complete and drop projects that had barely started. This means that Defend Your Dojo will not be receiving any more content updates, sad day I know… but this is because we’ve learned a lot about game design in the last couple years as indie developers. We did a lot of things wrong programming and development-wise with that game. We are more than okay with this, though, because DYD on its own right now is still a fully functional, action filled game.

Now let’s move on to present day projects. We are currently working on 3 total games. 2 Mobile and 1 PC-based that may eventually be ported to other platforms. Kcody has been putting together two mobile games over the last year and a half. They are nearly ready for release (just final details honed in) and we should have an update on those soon.

I have started development on a PC based side scroller (not to be named just yet). This is the game that I had talked about earlier,  the one I wanted to combine my love of music with. This game will be ever evolving and released in Chapters. With each chapter, new unique music will come with it. I’m expecting beta testing to begin in January (If you’re interested in playing the beta, please email zac@otcgaming.net).

On top of game development, we are working on bringing more unique content to our site. Writing about great Kickstarters that other indie developers are working on (like Jupiter Hell that was recently fully backed, congrats again guys!), or even about AAA titles that are going to be released in the coming year. We even want to focus on developing useful resources for everyone to use. This would include tutorials about starting your own games, as well as free to use sprites and graphics as well.
